Our trained technicians use Adobe Photoshop software to scan, analyse, crop, rotate and colour enhance your digital images. This includes a range of proprietary tools developed to produce high quality digital images from your photos, slides and negatives.
Photo scanning orders are normally completed in 7 - 10 days following arrival at the Remba Scanning Centre. During peak periods and for larger orders, the scanning process can sometimes take a little longer.
When digitising photos, it pays to do it once and do it right. And for scanning, that means using the right equipment, software and proven techniques. To produce the best result, your photos are scanned using the highest quality commercial photo scanners from proven brands, including Kodak and Nikon. With industry leading technology and image processing, the results are razor sharp.
With every order, we provide 30-day FREE back-up of your digital images from the day of dispatch. After 30 days, the images may be removed from our servers if required. Please contact us if you would like to keep your images stored on our secure servers for longer then 30 days.
We use only the best quality commercial photo scanners from trusted brands, including Kodak and Nikon. You can expect high quality reproductions of your original photos and in some cases we can even improve photos with free image enhancement.
Over time, photos can fade and some are under or overexposed when taken. The free image enhancement process analyses and improves the colour in most photos to provide colourful, vibrant digital images.

Depending on how you plan to use the digital images, there are two resolutions to choose from: Standard and HIGH. For some applications, standard resolution will be just fine, while for others, you'll get the best result by choosing HIGH resolution.
Standard resolution scans provide a smaller file size that is easy to use, but record less detail. HIGH resolution scans record the maximum amount of detail, but produce larger files.

It's fast and easy. Simply place your order online, send your photos and in 7 - 10 days you will receive the digital images on a CD, DVD or USB drive. To learn more, visit How It Works.
The maximum size photo that we normally scan is A3 (420 x 297 mm). For special applications we can scan photos and other documents larger in size. To learn more, please contact us.
The effective resolution of slide and negative film is limited by the film grain and the particles in dyes used to make the film emulsion. The highest quality films have an effective resolution of close to 4,000 dpi, thus scanning at a higher resolution is unlikely to produce a better quality image.
No. Slides are removed from the carousel (or box) and scanned individually, so sending your slides in the carousel is not necessary. If you would like to send the slides in the carousel, each slide will be removed, scanned and replaced in the same position.
Yes. Organising or grouping your slides can be convenient when you're searching for a particular digital image. In preparing your slides to send, it does help if they are all oriented in the same way (upright and with the emulsion layer facing in the same direction). This helps produce a better quality image.
Digital ICE™ is a technology developed by Applied Science Fiction to aid in the removal of dust and scratches from slide and negative scans. Unlike other solutions, which rely on software to 'clean-up' an image after scanning, Digital ICE™ uses infrared light during the scanning process to detect and digitally repair damage. This technology is applied FREE to all Remba slide and negative scans.
To learn more about Digital ICE™ and to see the dramatic difference it can make to negative and slide scans, visit Professional Slide Scanning.
Slides and negatives are scanned at a much higher resolution than photos to produce the same size digital image, for the simple reason that the size of the original is smaller (in physical size, a 35mm negative is much smaller than a 6" x 4" photo).
DPI is an abbreviation for 'dots per inch' (and it is sometimes referred to as PPI, or 'pixels per inch'). In scanning terms, DPI or PPI is the number of colour samples (or pixels) recorded along a one inch length of the item being scanned. For example, a 6" x 4" photo scanned at 300 dpi will produce a digital image that is 1,800 pixels by 1,200 pixels (6" x 300 dpi = 1,800 pixels; 4" x 300 dpi = 1,200 pixels).
The number of megapixels (or size) of a digital image depends on the size of the original and the resolution of the scan (dpi). The larger the original and the higher the resolution, the greater the size of the digital image in megapixels. For example, a 6" x 4" photo scanned at 300 dpi will produce a digital image that is 1,800 pixels by 1,200 pixels, or 2.2 megapixels (2.2 million pixels).
In many cases, the copyrights for studio proofs are retained by the photo studio. In order to have your photos scanned, you must have the proper rights or have been given permission to use them. If you are the copyright owner, have permission to copy the studio proofs, or in some cases if you are the owner of the photo, then we can assist you by making copies, otherwise, we cannot. If you are unsure about the copyright ownership of your photos, please contact us.
Some photos, due to their condition or type, require special attention to get the best result from the scanning process. These photos are classified as 'Special Photos'.
High resolution scans collect the greatest amount of detail from the original, and can be enlarged, reprinted and displayed in high quality. This resolution is recommended for enlargements, cropping/zooming, photo restoration, safekeeping and other applications that require a high level of detail. To learn more, visit Which resolution am I?.
For scrapbooking, HIGH resolution is normally preferred. Digital images created at this resolution can be enlarged (or cropped) and still produce high quality reprints (without any pixilation). It enables small photos to be more prominent in a layout and the 'noise' or background to be cropped out of others. To learn more, visit Which resolution am I?.
Slide and negative scans can produce great quality prints. Digital ICE™ technology is applied to all slide and negative scans FREE to reduce the appearance of dust and scratches. To learn more about Digital ICE™ and to see the dramatic difference it can make to negative and slide scans, visit Professional Slide Scanning.
We trim the edges of each digital image so that they are square (or rectangular). If the picture has a border (such as a white edge) this will normally be left as part of the digital image.
Sending photos by email is normally a compromise between file size (time) and photo size (detail). We recommend scanning at standard resolution which is a good compromise of both. To learn more, visit Which resolution am I?.
