Negatives are scanned at a much higher resolution than photos, for the simple reason that negatives are smaller.
The choice of resolution for negatives generally depends on how you plan to use the images. For some applications, standard resolution (2,000 dpi) will be just fine, while for others, you'll get the best result by choosing HIGH resolution (4,000 dpi).
